Last week in science class, we did a science lab on amorphis solids. We mixed water and corn starch to make our product (Popcorn not included). To make it more fun, we also added green food coloring to die our hands. After mixing it for a while, it started to become very hard to mix. We knew then to start our experiment. As i picked up a chuck of our result, it was very liquidy. But then as I started to play with it, it became a solid. As soon as i stopped playing with it, it turned back into a solid. With pressure and heat, the experiment is a solid. But as soon as you remove that force, it becomes a liquid. This acts like the Earth's mantle layer because it is forced inbetween the crust and the outer core which is very hot. This is also the reason why the crust is able to sit on top of the mantle. I enjoyed this experiment and loved how it dyed our hands. My mom FREAKED!! I wish all experiments were this fun.

Movie Connection to Science and Cares.
C.A.R.E.S is a program that influences non violence. The movie that we saw had a lot of these rules in them. For example, Henry's dad had to cooperate when he learned that Henry did not want to work in the coal mine he owned. At first, he was against the idea the henry wanted to be a rocket scientist because back then if you would usually take you fathers job, especially when he owns the buissness. It was very hard to get out of a coal mining area once you were in it. The only way you got out is some people got lucky and recieved a football scholarship. Henry tried to play football but he didn't suceed therefore he had to change his plans. His mom on the other hand had respect for Henry with his dream. Respect is the R in C.A.R.E.S. It also seemed like she was happy with whatever her son wanted to do. She would come to see most of all of Henry's rocket launches and she helped to build the rocket some. Another character that showed respect was the welder that would weld Henry's rockets together. Then he died, and Henry had respect for him because he looked back on all the things he did for him. His brother who got the scholarship for football showed assertion (the A in CARES). Assertion means that something is said in a positive manner that is held without a reason. He told Henry many times that the only probable way Henry could get out was on a football scholarship. He denied the offer many times. But then he went on to win the country science fair and lived a happy life. That is, out of the coal mining buissness his dad owned.
The movie we saw also related to science in many ways. The whole movie was about scince to be infact. One way it related was when they got in trouble for setting the forest fire with one of thier rocket. He used math to figue the angle at which it was shot to find where it landed. They proved the police wrong because it was no where near the forest. He also used science when he figured out what to put in the rocket to make it fly. He needed to take the weight and a whole buch of other things. There are many ways science connected to the movie "Rocket Boys."

I recently read an article on sickle cell anemia by Madden07. This disease is mostly found in African countries. Did you know, prior to me telling you, that the human cell is a red, round shape? Well, this disease turns them into a crescent moon shape. One out of twelve African’s have the trait. This does not mean they have the disease, but they can pass it to their offspring resulting in over 2 million having the disease now. After reading this article, I was grossed out that this disease does what it does.

Klinefelter Syndrome
Did you know that there are more than 10,000 diseases that are known to be in humans? Even though there are only 10,000 diseases, there are billions in the world that we have not discovered yet. Klinefelter syndrome is one of the 10,000 diseases. It was discovered in the early 1990's. Some complications are.....
* ADHD
* Lupus
* Rehumatoid arthritis
* Sjogren syndrome
* Breast cancer
* Depression
* Dyslexia
* Tumors
* Learning disabilities
* Lung disease
* Osteoperosis
As you can see, there are many things that can happen to you if you have this disease. Some symptoms are ........
* Infertility
* Less hair
* Enlarged breasts
* Small, firm testicles
* Small penis
* Tall height
The best treatment for klinefelter syndrome is testosterone therapy. Although only 40% survive the fetal period, the syndrome can starts as an adult. Since when you get older you make the decision to have kids, this disease can make men and only men infertilized. Which in english means, you can't have kids. It is not very probable to get this though. Only 1 out of 10,000 males get this syndrome. There is extra copies of each of the 23 chromosomes for a total of 46 per cell. Males without the syndrome are called xy males but men with it are xxy or some other variable with two different letters but more than the normal amount. They are still considered males though because they have two different chomosomes. In order to make new treatments, scientists would have to understand the elements of.......
* Speech development
* Behavioral
* Self-confidence

Your Mind Can Vary the Progress You Make from Excercising. (for science class)
Ordinary people were tested to see how well they did excercising when they were being mentally tested and mentally rested.
The Study
The 16 participants had the same amout of sleep, same amount to eat, smae amout to eat, and had the same exact meal after each test. The trials started with a brutal 90 minute stationary bike that made the bikers pay close attention and answer questions while they were riding with a fast response. this would be the mental test. The exercisers complained to be tired and lack lots of energy.
After this, the actual test was preformed. Bikers would ride until they couldn't ride anymore and scientists recorded that time. Exhaustion point was defined as when they had less that 60 tire rotations per minute over a period of five seconds.
Throughout both excercises, scientists took not of heart rate, oxygen consumption, cardiac output , blood pressure, ventilation, and blood lacate levels. Scientists offered an award to the best excersiser to keep motivation high.
Results
"The participants stopped exercising 15% earlier, on average, when they were mentally fatigued," results said. All participants stopped at exhaustion point at about the same time, yet mentally fatigued people had a higher effort rate at the begining, and reached the endpoint sooner. Motivation was basically the same for both tests, therefore this was not a factor.

Rutgers-Newark marks 40th anniversary of Conklin Hall takeover
Did you know that in 1969 and before, Rugters-Newark was a whits people only school? Well, 39 years ago today, there was an angy mob that was protesting about the color separation.Fortunately, they succeeded! So to celebrate, today students marched to Universal Avenue where this all took place and made speaches, panels and events agnowledging that the protesters were they and going strong for 72 hours. Today, Rugters- Newark is ranked the mostracially-diverse public university campus in the United States of America. So to come from being an all white school, this is amazing. Rugters- NewarkChancellor Steven Diner says that he doesn't remember any other protest that has ever taken place that was successful as this one. For the ceremony today, most protesters came back in their late 50's early 60's to help celebrate. They all had different emotions when everything was taking place. Many cannot believe that it already has been close to 40 years. They remember it like it could have been yesterday. On February 24, 1969, close to two dozen people sid into the building to protest and chained the doors while some stood by the doors to negotiate with the officers. An angry group of white men for Essex County college tried to break down the door with a telephone pole, they were unsuccessful. Overall, the day was very hectic and should always be rembered.

Lately in Science Class......
Curently in science class, we are building rollercoasters to help learn about friction, and gravity. It sounds fun and suprisingly, it is, thought it is not as easy as it sounds. We need at least three hills and lots of turns or twists. In order to even be graded a marble must be able to run continously through the coaster. Not to mention, we are making it only out of common household like papertowel rolls and cereal boxes. Our final product was due today but unfourtanetly, I was out sick today so I am very anxious to see the how it turned out. We started making plans and building on monday so, we didn't have a whole lot of time to make it, so we did the most we could with the time alowed.

Uncovering the lost Path of the Most Wanted Nazi
http://nytimes.com/2009/02/05/world/africa/05nazi.html?_r=1&ref+http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/05/world/africa/05nazi.html?_r=1&ref=world=world
A medical doctor that worked in concentration camps who was also called Dr. Death was one of the most wanted Nazi's. He was born with the name of Aribert Ferdinand Heim and he worked on healthy inmates and didn't work on people who actually needed help. He was a so called bad doctor. he would take organs out of healthy inmates, not work on prisoners with anestheisa, then leaving them to die on the operating table. In 1962, he barely escaped being captured by Nzi police that were being sent around to find any leftover Nazi's. His hiding place since then and death in 1992 was not known until now. This was a very sly man who was always quick on his feet. At first, witnesses said that he was hiding somewhere in Latin America. a briefcase found in storage told us all about how he got to the middle passage, his life, and death in Egypt. Truly this was a mysterious man. If you would like to learn more, please feel free to click on the link above. I hope you enjoy this.

Science Class Update.
Currently in science class, we are learning about rays. Some examples are infrared, microwaves, and a tv. Seperately, all of the students did research on a type of ray and had to make a visual. The type that was assigned to me was infrared rays. Did you know that infrared rays are used in the military? They are used mostly for snipers and soilders in the dark. An infrared ray detects heat. This can help snipers because if an enemy is hiding, they can find them then shoot away. Night vision goggles also use infrared rays. It is useful to find someone or thing at night in the dark. So basically, it makes everything brighter. To find out that something is there, the rays give off a color relating to how hot the heat is. Anything that uses heat, uses infrared rays. I hope this was a good lesson on the magic wonders on INFRARED RAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Inauguration of Barak Obama
I found two terrific websites on Obama's inauguration. As we all know, on Tuesday, January 20 2009, Barak Obama made history. All of the united States presidents wer all white. For the first time we have an african american president. Trust me, I am as excited as you. Both articles talk about ow big of a moment in history this was. You may know that he swore on the same bible that Abrahm Lincoln swore on. If you didn't now you do! I find it pretty amazing that they know where this bible was and the shape the bible was in.
The first article talks about a man how is very young that Obama calls the "presidents mindreader." He is 27 year old Jon Favreau and he is the co-writer of Barak's speech. As the youngest chief speech writer ever recorded, he is doing very well for his age. Throughout the article it explains the relationship between the president and his speech writer.
The second article talks about first how Obama made a mistake during his swear. It only shows that he is human. It also talks about other presidents mistakes. For examle, William Henry Harrison's speech was an hour and forty minutes. That may not be a mistake, but it was a rediculious amount of time. The article states that the crowd was singing this land is your land and instead of hit the road Jack, it was hit the road Bush. While singing, they realized they had to sing some thing about beinga "historic" event but was unfourtunate to find any synonyms. I still wonder why Harrison's speech was so long.

LA NINA IS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
http://sciencenow.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/2009/108/1
There is a storm coming through the south eastern part of the US that is starting in the Pacific ocean. This is called La Nina and is a cousin to El Nino that causes weather-related damage across the south east. La Nina happens when the water of the ocean is colder than usual and is below .5 degrees celcius. This is expected to continue all the way through March and will finaly stop. Although it will leave a big mark, states in our area will not be hit. In the south east states like Florida and Maryland, there will be lots of rain, dried up land, and will increase the chances of tornados.Hopefully, it does not to too much damage.
